• This module will begin with introducing cognitive psychology as the conceptual science. Throughout this module we will examine the representation of knowledge, attention, language and cognition. This module will also explore the issue of problem solving, creativity, thinking, reasoning and deduction, and finally explore the concept of artificial intelligence and how language and problem solving can be used in artificial intelligence.

    The avenues through which you will learn in this module consist of LECTURES, TUTORIALS and STUDENT DIRECTED LEARNING (SDL).

    LECTURES will typically last for 1 hour each week and provide an opportunity for your lecturer to highlight, explain and elaborate the main points about the week’s topic. What is covered in lectures may not cover all the things you are expected to learn about a particular topic – you must also read widely.

    TUTORIALS will, on average, last 1.5 hours each week. Tutorials provide avenues for learning, consolidation and expansion of topics covered in lectures. This is achieved through a range of activities that might include debates, critical evaluations of videos, conducting surveys, laboratory-based activities, role-plays, and e-learning activities etc. Depending upon the tutorial activity, not all tutorials will necessarily be conducted in the classroom.

    STUDENT DIRECTED LEARNING (SDL) is expected to occupy at least 1.5 hours of your time each week. During this time you are required to explore more deeply the topics and issues covered in classes. On occasions, your lecturer may suggest certain directions and activities for you, however, the primary purpose of STUDENT DIRECTED LEARNING (SDL) is to encourage you to be a ‘self-learner’ and give you the opportunity to explore more widely and in more depth, areas related to the topics covered in lectures and tutorials.
